CHUMP CHANGE

Bundaberg’s coolest video games and collectables shop, Chump Change, will have a big stall at the Nambour Black Market. We love to hear from folks operating in smaller regional towns, so we sent them some questions. Be sure to pop in early this Saturday 18 April to scope out their tables.

BAD HABIT: Hey there. How’s Bundaberg? Can we start with some history on how Chump Change came to be?

BEE: Why hello there, my name is Bee and I run this lil store with my wife Al and our soon-to-be sister-in-law Shontai. We first started our journey when I left my cabinet making apprenticeship. I was seeking a change and I’ve always loved gaming, mostly PS1 and PS2 era games and old tech. My wife has always been a big Pokemon fan and collects shiny cardboard amongst many other things.

We started Chump Change Videogames & Collectables as a way to get back in touch with simpler times, really. We first started selling at the Shalom Markets, every Sunday for two years, as well as a little bit online, mostly through eBay. We eventually outgrew our market stall and along came the store where we have been growing stronger every day. We have been in the store for almost two years now.

BH: There's a long-standing history of “creative people” (broadly speaking) leaving smaller towns like Bundaberg (and Nambour) and moving to a bigger city with more opportunities, community and support. What made you folks stay in Bundy? Personally, in Nambour it can be very stifling at times, but there's so much joy in building something in what can be a challenging environment.

BEE: It is funny you mention this; we actually left the big smoke in April 2022. We moved to Bundy to be closer to family and to buy our house together. We originally fell in love with Bundy when we started to visit my parents in Bargara. It was just so much quieter and calmer.

Brisbane was just so busy, we felt like a bit of a change. I also feel that Bundaberg has potential, there are still opportunities to be had here. Everything has been done before in Brissy or it would be a hell of a lot more expensive to do or build anything there.

Our intentions for the store were to create a fun, inviting and interactive experience, kind of like a Japanese game store. We are also super big on recycling and keeping old tech alive for the next generations to enjoy.

BH: What other exciting things are going on in Bundaberg culturally? Is there much local music of interest to you guys?

BEE: We are big music fans! Love Aussie pub rock, punk, grunge and surf rock to name a few. Recently, we’ve had a lot more bands pull through town, which is very very exciting for us personally and the local community.

BH: What else is unique about Bundaberg? What do you usually recommend visitors to check out?

Besides Chump Change Videogames & Collectables, the highlights of Bundaberg would be the Botanic Gardens, the Playhouse Theatre, cultural tours and of course the Hinkler Hall of Aviation. Bundy is also famous for beautiful beaches and local farming experiences!

BH: How do you source your stock? Is there much of a scene of people selling and trading locally or do you have to import from overseas?

BEE: We’re very grateful to have a steady supply of collectors walk through our store whom are looking to either part ways with their collections or trade in items they have for ones they don’t. We do buy online occasionally when we are in dire need of a particular genre of games. But most items come in person at shows or in store.

BH: Tell us about the rarest thing to come through the shop.

BEE: The rarest item we’ve had in store…dang that is a toughy.. I mean Pikachu 3ds LL, Toploading NES, Virtual Boy (my own but still a display piece) Masters of Combat on the Sega Master System, plus some notable shiny cardboards.

We have been super fortunate to hold some super relics in our possession, but they always seem to move on rather quick (maybe a bit too quickly sometimes).

BH: Tell us what you'll have on the tables at the markets. Any grail type pieces?

BEE: At Nambour Black Market, we hope to bring some Grail gamu all the way from Atari PS4 era, some spicey cardboard (MTG, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh and One Piece), custom and reg consoles/handhelds and plug n plays. A nice little selection of all things good coming your way!

BH: Any last words? Have you ever seen a UFO or had any paranormal experiences?

Personally, I can't say I've ever seen a UFO but paranormal experiences? Maybe too many to count these days, haha. Just want to say thank you to you guys and shout out to Bundy peeps for keeping us going and shining the light in dark times <3

DREW CLOSE – URBAN FICTION

Nerd culture is pretty much everywhere these days, but it hasn’t always been this way. Before EB Games and JB Hi-fi started cashing in on action figures and Funko Pops, Drew Close was grinding it out in the basement of a Nambour taco shop. Unfortunately, sky-rocketing rents and corporate competition meant the good times had […]

LEAKER

LEAKER are uncomfortable listening. They sit in that new wave of Queensland bands, like Slowcut, that push music out of the punk/hardcore/heavy metal quadrant into more obtuse noise. Post hardcore? Noise rock? Sludge? Whatever you call it? They are playing at the next Nambour Black Market. And they have a new self-released LP. Read on […]

BLEEDING WOUNDS

Look, when we started promoting Namba Black Market Day, Bleeding Wounds had a different name. We probably won’t get around to updating it everywhere, so just know that anywhere you see ‘Scream Out’, that should actually say Bleeding Wounds. The new name comes with a fresh lineup and a bit of a shift in sound […]
